Nyamasheke Nyungwe Forest Reserve, Rwanda
One&Only Nyungwe House
Pride of the Rainforest
What it is
An exclusive 22-room retreat within a tea plantation—where chimpanzees are your neighbor.
What it isn't
Dry and parched. This is the rainforest, and every bird call will remind you of it.
What we think
Spear Throwing. Picking Tea Leaves. Hilltop Archery. They’re all among the curated experiences on offer here, yet none are the reason you’ve come. In Nyungwe National Park, you have one goal: to spot chimpanzees in the flesh. One & Only makes it as easy as possible on their Chimpanzee Trekking experience, where you’ll seek out the hooting denizens on early-morning hikes up cacophonous rainforest trails. (Have a taste for trekking now? Don’t miss looking for the Colombus Monkey, or even the Bird Watching excursion, which will have you eyeing the forest canopy for some 300 species, including the Grey-Chested Kakamega.)
You're here because
The “Rustic” rooms are anything but. Expect crackling fires in your fireplace; locally hand-hewn furniture; and private decks overlooking the leafy forest canopy.
The Moment
Plopped by the fireplace in the Tea Lounge, overlooking adjacent viridescent grasses and forests, you could easily think you’re sequestered away in the spa. But no: this is simply another restaurant on the property, each more exquisite than the last. When High Tea comes, you find yourself smiling as wide as a child—and that’s before the caffeine hits.
