The Opposite House

Beijing's boutique choice

What it is

An emerald tower in Beijing’s shopping Mecca.

What it isn't

Cold: The contemporary design is warmed by organic touches.

What we think

In a traditional Chinese house, the building that sits on the south side of a walled-in courtyard is referred to as the opposite house, a structure used to host friends and gather with family. The hotel’s Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma, used the architectural term as an overall design inspiration, striving to make the Opposite House a place to relax and commune.

Travelers gather in the hotel’s soaring atrium and living room, decorated with conversation-starting artwork that rotates every several months. Guests can unwind in the 72-foot pool, a marvel in stainless steel.

Of the hotel’s four eating establishments, be sure to make reservations at Jing Yaa Tang for artfully presented traditional Chinese dishes—Peking duck, pork ribs with spicy black beans. There is also a semi-private wine tasting room that hosts regular events.

All 99 studios are uncluttered and sleek, thanks to natural wood floors and furnishings, crisp linens and dark stone accent walls. Soothing design elements continue in the glass-enclosed bathrooms outfitted with oak wood tubs, rain showers and heated floors. With turndown comes a host of amenities—moisturizing face masks and lip balms—to fight Beijing’s dry climate.

You're here because

You want to stay in a boutique property—rather than one of Beijing's massive hotel towers—with an innovative take on Asian-inspired design.

The Moment

Partaking in one of the hotel’s regular afternoon tea or lunches collaboratively planned with fashion brands such as Jo Malone, Paul Smith or Versace. They’re hosted at Sureño, the hotel’s Mediterranean-style restaurant, where mid-century tables and chairs sit under spherical light fixtures.
