Park Hyatt Shanghai

Skyscraping Stunner

What it is

A 173-room ultra-luxury refuge tucked between floors 79 and 93 of the Shanghai World Financial Center, with a transcendent spa.

What it isn't

Cold. You might imagine a sleek tower to feel removed from real world thrills, but it’s anything but, with a tai chi courtyard and unmissable afternoon tea.

What we think

No one flies to Shanghai to live small—here in this city of nearly 25 million, only living large will do. Rooms here are more than up to the task, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows peeping out on the Bund, towering ceilings (nearly 11 feet or more) and sleek interiors—from the gray and white color palette to the walk-in rain showers that call to mind the city’s summer squalls. Book at least one dinner at The Dining Room, the hotels’ exceedingly welcoming restaurant—a fount of Shanghainese, Zhejiang and Jiangsu dishes—on the 87th floor. Your order: wok-fried Australian lobster with chives, spring onion and shallot and Chef Yang’s signature baked duck in lotus leaf with baby abalone.

You're here because

You’ve always felt you could fly—and swimming in the spa’s mosaic-lined, 65-foot-long infinity pool lofted over the Huangpu river is the next best thing. After all: what’s staying in one of the world’s tallest hotels good for, if not for this?

The Moment

You felt like steak, your traveling companion was jonesing for sashimi. Blessedly, 100 Century Avenue Restaurant—on the 93rd floor—suits nearly every taste, with a 500-label-deep wine list to boot. After lunching on a Wagyu beef burger and Shanghai noodles with crab roe, you agree on one thing: a raspberry romanoff for dessert. “Extra whipped cream, please.”
