Central, Hong Kong

The Upper House

An airy, urban hotel with luxury standards

What it is

A Pacific Place hotel where studios and suites, which start on the 38th floor, are sleek and minimalist.

What it isn't

The hotel is located on Hong Kong Island, not Kowloon (mainland Hong Kong), which could be inconvenient for some first-time Hong Kong travelers. Also, it doesn’t have a spa.

What we think

The name Upper House is based on a philosophy that centers on a quiet dwelling above the bustling city. Also using this as design inspiration, Hong Kong-based architect Andre Fu of AFSO created a serene, residential space made up of natural materials—Bedonia stone, shoji glass, textured nickel, bamboo—punctuated by thought-provoking paintings and sculptures. Starting at 730 square feet, the hotel has the largest guest rooms in the city, and because they start on the 38th floor, floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Victoria Harbor or Hong Kong Island. Guest quarters also have dressing rooms, walk-in rain showers, duel temperature wine refrigerators and freestanding limestone tubs, where you can soak with city views. When you tire of darting between shopping-bag totting pedestrians in the Pacific Place neighborhood, head to the outdoor lawn on the sixth floor—a rare stretch of green space dotted with beanbag chairs. You can also grab an Earl Grey Martini in the elegant 49-foot-long bar at Café Gray Deluxe, an ideal perch from which to watch the nightly lights show over Victoria Harbor.

You're here because

You love Hong Kong’s energy but crave a restorative escape, and you’re willing to pay a premium for space and city views.

The Moment

Positioning yourself in resting pose on your mat as you begin weekend morning yoga, led by a master yogi, on the hotel’s sixth floor lawn. Lights flicker on in the surrounding skyscrapers as the city wakes up and begins its day.
