What it is
A lush jungly dream, where 40 villas edge the Petanu River gorge.
What it isn't
Unapproachable. This is one of the few family-owned five-star resorts in the nation.
What we think
The readers of Conde Nast Traveler voted this the number one (number one!) resort in the world in 2018. Among the many reasons why: villas are fit for Balinese royals, with warm plunge pools, partially-outdoor bathrooms and hand-carved wooden doors. Indulgent service includes 24-hour room service and 24-hour security, making it a celebrity magnet. And the Lembah Spa Ubud, hung over a ravine overlooking the Petanu River valley, is reportedly the most chillaxing you can find in Bali, with staff reflexologists, Balinese treatments (but Swiss-trained therapists), and an American jacuzzi with a whopping 68 jets. If nothing else, sit in the cliffside infinity pool and ogle the surrounding tropical forest. You’ll never see such verdant greens anywhere else—it’s the ultimate in the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku, or Forest Bathing.
You're here because
You didn’t come all the way to Bali to eat Americanized food, and Viceroy’s CasCades Restaurant is as authentic as it gets (don’t miss the Ikan Panggang with young mango salsa and rica rica sauce).
Yoga is the most “meh” of all workouts you’ve ever tried. That was, until, you opted for a sunrise session here, where your sun salutations greeted the pink dawn rising over the misty hills, birdsong trilling in the air like an IRL sound machine. Namaste indeed.
