Elbow Beach Bermuda

Casual elegance on Bermuda's best pink sand

What it is

A tidy colonial retreat on the best of Bermuda’s pink sands.

What it isn't

A modern or chicly on-trend Caribbean getaway.

What we think

Built in 1908, the landmark beach retreat retains a firm grip on the sensibilities of yesteryear. Perfect lawns are neatly trimmed in lieu of intricate landscaping, century-old crystal chandeliers hang in the regal lobby and the standards of service are superlative (the concierge will happily and helpfully field any inquiry be it a specific tee time at one of the island’s golf courses, a private tennis or snorkeling lesson or the best hidden cafe in Hamilton.) A 5.5 million dollar renovation back in 2010 removed all the tired, outdated bits from the property, but without damaging the resort’s classic feel. White-trimmed, pale yellow colonial cottages (which house the resort’s 98 rooms and suites) spread out over almost 50 acres of prime beachfront real estate. Indeed, this stretch of private pink sand is unanimously voted as the best on the island. There are four restaurants on the property - either looking out at the Atlantic through elegant dining room windows or sitting right atop the pink beach. For those that need a break from the sun and sand, there’s a delightful spa with a bevy of treatments, rituals, massages and scrubs.

You're here because

You want something that promotes a casual, comfortable vibe (of course, never sacrificing luxury) instead of a resort where the sidewalks are catwalks and your suite’s furniture is as untouchable as a piece in the MoMA.

The Moment

Walking across the gold and cerulean Oriental rug, you realize the lobby is a beautiful mash-up of far-flung places. Potted palms, ornate crown molding, fresh orchids and the gleaming crystal chandelier. The smiling concierge greets you and follows up on how scuba diving went this morning - did you make it out to the shipwreck? You grin, remembering her suggestion yesterday that you take a boat out to the site. You tell her you’re going to explore it again tomorrow, but first: where does she recommend you go for dinner?

Restaurants & Bars

Mickey's Bar & Bistro - The only restaurant in Bermuda situated directly on the beach

Cafe Lido - Mediterranean-influenced menu with an emphasis on fresh seafood

Sea Breeze - Serves an extensive selection of tapas and sushi

Blue Point - Relaxed dining with alfresco seating and panoramic ocean views

Location

On the southern coast of the island, the cottages are just five minutes from Bermuda’s capital city, Hamilton, and a 30-minute taxi ride from the international airport. Wonderfully, Bermuda is just a two and half hour direct flight from northern cities (like NYC) and southern cities (like Miami.)
