What it is
A boutique hotel with character and a brilliant location.
What it isn't
One of the island’s giant, off-the-rack resorts.
What we think
Rockhouse Hotel has one of the choicest locations on the island. We know how often reviews claims this, but perched along the rugged cliffs of Jamaica’s westernmost point, this wee collection of villas is privy to some of the most incredible sunsets around. Arranged like a village along the volcanic cliffs, the 34 rooms are split between studios and rooms set back amongst the tropical greenery and private bungalows on the waterfront. The rock houses (made out of—you guessed it—rock) are rustic yet chic, authentically cool and undeniably luxe. The ceilings are sky high thanks to the pitched roofs, locally sourced wood is the construction material of choice and there’s a wonderful airy openness to the space. Wandering around the resort, guests will find live reggae, a restaurant and rum bar with perfectly executed island dishes drawing from Jamaican street food (try the Jerk chicken that’s grilled under a rock), a spa that feels like a temple and an infinity pool that’s carved into the cliffs. There’s no proper beach here, but there are ladders and carved stairways that provide easy access to the turquoise water. (For those who want sand, there are beaches within a ten minute drive.) While the sunsets, the dramatic cliffside perch, the top-notch food and wonderfully friendly Caribbean service may be enough, the hotel also donates a portion of guests’ bills to local schools and libraries.

You're here because
You’re looking for a romantic getaway, one that feels distinctly different and has no trace of pretentiousness—just a chill, cool vibe.
It’s hard to imagine a sunset that comes close to matching this one. Pointing due west on the cliffs 20 feet above the surf, you watch as the sea and the sky mirror one another, creating a canvas that stretches farther than the eye can see.
