In the late 1950's, Laurence Rockefeller turned this 50-acre coconut plantation on the north shore of Puerto Rico into the quintessence of a glamorous Caribbean resort. Amelia Earhart would fly her plane down for a visit; Joan Crawford had her room painted pink pre-arrival. Now, after a complete renovation, it's a Ritz-Carlton Reserve and once again attracting jet-setters. Along a solid mile of beach are 115 rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that disappear into the walls so you can (almost) feel the spray of the ocean. The resort is surrounded by lush tropical forest and the site's natural assets are woven throughout the property and reflected in the design (Rockefeller was doing ecotourism before anyone called it that). Chef José Andrés runs the food and beverage program; golf legend Chi-Chi Rodriguez is the resident pro; and the indoor-outdoor spa is massive and stunning. It's enough pampering to make you feel like Cleopatra (yes, Liz Taylor was a regular) or like Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who recently rented the resort's exquisite private villa.
