Baie Longue, Saint Martin
La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel
Secluded Caribbean luxury
What it is
The island’s grande dame, with an atmosphere of relaxed elegance.
What it isn't
An all-inclusive, or within walking distance of St. Martin’s towns.
What we think
You’re greeted with a rum punch at this gated resort, the island’s most exclusive thanks to its own crescent of Baie Longue (Long Bay) beach and refreshed collection of whitewashed suites, cottages and villas. Guests, comfortable breezing through the resort’s flower-lined walkways in smart sports attire or a sarong, can enjoy the tropical gardens, two pools and tennis courts, or head to the beach, where non-motorized water sports—kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding—are complimentary. There’s also a well-kept spa where five of the nine treatment rooms are indoor/outdoor; a well-rounded list of treatments includes a 90-minute shiatsu massage and restorative body polish. At night, dine on tuna tartare or yellowtail at Trellis restaurant, which overlooks the water, or reserve the private table in the 12,000-bottle wine cellar—one of the largest in the Caribbean.
You're here because
You like laid-back luxury and a country club atmosphere, and don’t mind being a drive away from the island’s action.
The Moment
You dig your toes in the sand under a white tablecloth at a private beach dinner on the water’s edge. Waiters serve butter-poached lobster by candlelight; the stars above, uninterrupted by city lights, twinkle brightly.
