Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica
Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo
What it is
An adventure-stocked retreat on a 1,400-acre peninsula in the Pacific Ocean.
What it isn't
Hands-off. Sure, you can zip-line, scale a nearby volcano, or hike up rainforest hills—but that doesn’t mean you won’t get ultra-pampering service the moment you get back “home.”
What we think
The unofficial tagline of Costa Rica is “pura vida”—or “pure life”—and that’s incredibly fitting, especially at this resort, where the focus is on simple joys you’ll never forget, from sunset catamaran tours of the sea to surfing with expert coaches at Ollies Point. But in the rooms, we find it’s anything but simple, thanks to terraces set open to the dry forest, marble-lined bathrooms and a clean-lined aesthetic that service to make the wilderness beyond the windows that much more alluring. The resort’s 18-hole golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer, is chockablock with rolling hills and exultant monkeys—and about as far from standard-issue golf as it gets.
You're here because
You have a bit of an addiction when it comes to wood-fired fare, and one of the hotel’s top-notch restaurants, Bahia, is dedicated to it. Wood mushroom flatbread with caramelized onions? Wood-fired cabbage, served with smoked cheese? Don’t mind if you do.
You’ve spent a day in the sun, and you don’t regret a single ray. But now, you’re exhausted—the way only the sun can make you—and need a bit of R&R. Happily, the resort’s exquisite spa has you covered. Five minutes in to your seawater and volcanic mud massage, you decide you’re coming back tomorrow. Pura Vida!
