Hotel Goldener Hirsch

A Luxury Collection Hotel

What it is

An inn since 1407 (!), now with 70 antique-filled rooms and dining options so divine you won’t want to leave the premises.

What it isn't

Outfitted with a gym. Who needed one in the 15th century? Instead, staffers will be delighted to point you to nearby hiking trails on nature preserves.

What we think

Fairytale hotels are all-too rare. The rooms in this one, as storied as they come, are chockablock with charm, from the hand-printed folkloric upholstery fabrics (straight out of Shirley Temple’s 1937 film ‘Heidi’) to the coffee tables, hewn of blonde wood shoemaker’s benches. And don’t worry, amenities are modern: you’ll have a walk-in rainfall shower in your marble-lined bathroom, soundproof windows, lightning fast WiFi and a flatscreen TV the Brothers Grimm would find uproariously entertaining. Don’t leave without spending at least one night bellied up to the bar downstairs in the former inner courtyard, where hunting lodge guests used to tie up their steeds.

You're here because

Megawatt icons throughout history have stayed here, including Elizabeth Taylor, the Gettys, and the Prince of Wales.

The Moment

Housed in an arched-ceilinged space that was long a ferrier’s shop, Restaurant Goldener Hirsch is worth the trip alone, especially because they were able to seat you at the corner window table that Herbert von Karajan—Salzburg Festival conductor—favored. At least, that’s the thought bubble that floats above your head after one bite of poached trout in buttered potato sauce from glass-clear Lake Fuschl. For dessert? A Salzburger nockerl (souffle)with lingonberries. Fairytale, indeed.

Restaurants & Bars

Two authentic Austrian restaurants, the exquisite restaurant Goldener Hirsch and the indigenous restaurant "'Herzl", are just like the renowned bar Salzburg's top pre and post-theater haunts, paying homage to the city's rich bohemian heritage. The historical "Die Bibliothek", meanwhile, offers a glimpse at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch Salzburg's scholarly past.

Guests walking into the Bar Goldener Hirsch at the 5-star Luxury Collection Hotel in Salzburg's old town can expect a continuation of the hotel's traditional motif as stags are affixed above the arches on white walls. Dispersed among the tables covered in hand-woven linens are fauteuil armchairs, just right for basking in the open sky ambience. Originally an inner courtyard where horses would await their owner's return, the space is now considered one of the world's most beautifully outfitted "Bauernstil" rooms, and is a favorite of distinguished, international travelers. The extensive cocktail and fine wine list is marked by the "Rendezvous with Susanne," the bar's most well-known drink. As legend has it, young Susanne frequented the bar with her parents for many years, ordering orange juice. As time moved on, the renowned bartender Kurti added a bit of Cassis. When Susanne was 13-years-old, tonic water was added, Campari at 16, and Vodka at 18. Today the drink is called "Susanne," and a specialty that regular guests look forward to. Taste it yourself.

Location

In Salzburg’s storybook Old Town, about a five block walk from Mozart Wohnhaus, his home from 1773 to 1787, now a museum where you can see his pianoforte.
