Hôtel Martinez
Art Deco landmark on La Croisette
What it is
A bustling hotel behind an iconic façade.
What it isn't
Overly formal. Despite the heritage and glam quotient, the vibe is unfussy.
What we think
A blindingly white Art Deco showpiece directly on the main drag of La Croisette, the Martinez is a hive of celebrity activity during the Film Festival, and that effervescent buzz lasts the whole season. Technically a Grand Hyatt (though the branding is subtle), it’s a big place, with 409 rooms. But the lobby and reception area, with their mirrored columns and earth-toned marble, are relatively quiet. There’s more action in the piano bar and the Michelin-starred Palme d’Or restaurant, both of which draw Riviera regulars. Guest rooms are elegantly furnished in low-key 1930’s style, with higher-level rooms done in a striking azure or ivory color scheme; many have spectacular views of the Mediterranean. Suites are even more elaborate, with hardwood floors and private terraces. Across the boulevard, the hotel’s private beach has 400 chaise lounges set in perfect rows, as well as the beloved waterfront restaurant Zplage. The Martinez is also home to a Givenchy spa, one of only a handful in the world; set on the 7th floor, it offers every conceivable treatment.
