Tiergarten, Berlin
Das Stue
Neoclassical Made New
What it is
Formerly the Danish Embassy, now a gray stone hideaway that’s as diplomatic as ever.
What it isn't
Humdrum. Patricia Urquiola designed the lobby and bar with her trademark whimsy (and many, many animal sculptures).
What we think
Despite a reputation as a Berlin hotspot, 78-room Das Stue is extremely calming inside—especially in the rooms, which have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking leafy Tiergarten and plush ultra-long (nearly seven-foot) king-sized beds. The coveted art collection veers from Benedetta Mori wire animals to Richard Avedon portraits. But the restorative highlight may well be the Susanne Kaufmann Boutique Spa, where you can tread across a 46-foot long indoor pool, take a custom yoga class on a stand-up paddleboard or glow anew with her ultrasonic facials. Don’t miss the decadent Sunday brunch, which includes bottomless cava and private access to the adjacent Berlin Zoo—especially entertaining after said bottomless cava.
You're here because
Berlin’s center of style gravity is shifting west again, and you want to follow suit in a design-conscious but elegant hotel.
The Moment
Sipping on a Sparkling Jasmine cocktail in the dimly lit bar, you allow yourself to feel like you live here—and the night is only just beginning as the local Deco-era jazz band the Shoeswing Stringers take the stage.
