Breidenbacher Hof, Capella Düsseldorf

A Legend Reborn

What it is

A newly redone 1812 icon with 85 rooms, 21 suites, an indoor pool and jaw-dropping spa amenities, like two Finnish saunas and cocoon-shaped treatment rooms.

What it isn't

Hungry. The four on-site restaurants include the Art Deco-inspired The Duchy, where dishes include pheasant with bacon croutons and champagne cabbage and a caviar-dusted carbonara pasta with champagne foam.

What we think

If you love to stay where fame has stayed, Breidenbacher Hof may be your dream Düsseldorf hotel. Prince August of Prussia and Russian Czar Alexander II slept in the 19th century property—rebuilt entirely since it was flattened in World War II, and recently built again and redesigned entirely to suit modern tastes. Guest rooms have traditional, timeless bones (gleaming woodwork; sumptuous draperies) and every luxury one could hope for, including ultra soft Egyptian cotton bed linens, Italian marble-lined bathrooms with rain showers, and touch panels by each bed that control everything from the AC to the mood lighting. Even starter rooms are huge—beginning at a whopping 441-square-feet—but we’d recommend upgrading to a Grand Suite for a separate living room equipped with a fireplace, an en-suite Jacuzzi, and L’Occitane toiletries for the total DIY spa experience. Oh: did we mention that any room you pick will have a Nespresso coffee machine and gratis snacks in the mini bar?

You're here because

The hotel has a ‘Capella Culturist’ on staff who can introduce you to insider’s experiences in the city, whether you want to meet master brewers on private behind the scenes tours of Düsseldorf breweries or photograph street art with pro photographer Melanie Zanin.

The Moment

You felt a little like you’d entered a cigar museum when you stepped foot inside Capella Bar’s humidor, where 124 sundry smokes from Cuba and the Dominican Republic sweetened the air. At the marble bar, you order from the Japanese cocktail menu (a nod to the city’s many Japanese expats). Your tipple of choice? The Hanami, with sea water, cherry bark smoke, and Nikka whisky.
