Mandarin Oriental Munich

Elegance Incarnate

What it is

An ornate yet modern retreat with five bars and restaurants beloved by the locals; a steam bath and sauna; and gym with personal trainers to put you through the paces.

What it isn't

Boring. The hotel has curated a seemingly bottomless list of unexpected activities here, ranging from climbing the roof of the 1927 Summer Olympic Stadium to private boat rides on Lake Chiemsee to see the baroque circa 1869 Herrenchiemsee Castle, which was inspired by Versailles.

What we think

In Bavaria, a place already renowned for its exquisite sights—including Nymphenburg Palace and Asamkirche, a chapel that appears to drip with gold—Mandarin Oriental Munich ranks. Guest rooms here are as artful as they are spacious, beginning with the 355 square foot Superior Rooms, where original art by Munich’s own Felix Rehfeld adds modernity to classically appointed rooms complete with wood floors and wainscoting. We love that these “starter” rooms are luxurious, including toiletries from La Biosthétique, a private bar that’s restocked daily, and heated floors in the spa-like bathroom. If it’s a fairytale vibe you’re after, book the Bavaria Suite; tucked in an age-old tower, it contains a circular bedroom and a fully separate living room ideal for curling up with a copy of Steppenwolf.

You're here because

Once you’ve hit the town, you like to chillax back at the hotel for dinner, drinks, and plenty of in-room R&R. The fact that there are five restaurant and bar options here (including a Deco inspired cocktail bar worthy of Jay Gatsby) means you’ll never get bored.

The Moment

Up on the hotel’s roof, surrounded by the ancient church spires of the city, you’re ensconced in an igloo—and sipping cocktails by candlelight. Could anything be better? Then the waiter brings in a chocolate dome with Suntory Whiskey. Oh yes. Yes, it could.
