Kivotos Mykonos

Classic Mykonos boutique embellished with modern art

What it is

A stylish boutique hotel in wind-protected Ornos Bay.

What it isn't

Mykonos has a reputation for effervescent nightlife; Kivotos is not sleepy, but it’s not the heart of the party.

What we think

Tucked into the back of the Bay of Ornos, the Kivotos Hotel’s clustered buildings are terraced up the rocky hillside. The property is quite tiny at only 39 rooms and suites, but it certainly isn’t lacking in character. The common spaces and accommodations seamlessly blend stylishly forward contemporary pieces, classic vintage details and nods to the island's ancient history: guest rooms mix abstract paintings and neon accents with antique mirrors, and carved wooden beds, all within the old world, low, bright white plaster and natural stone Cycladic architecture. Stone paths wind down the hill between the buildings, edged with bright green palms and flowering plants. There is a large freshwater pool on the upper levels of the property, while an even larger saltwater pool is below, at the base of the property. The hotel’s slice of private beach allows guests a chance to lay out on sunbeds, get a massage or order small plates and or a cocktail, but the larger Ornos beach (with watersports, far more umbrellas and lounge chairs and a ton of restaurants) is only a five-minute walk away. The hotel’s walled-property is home to two restaurants of its own, as well as two additional bars. The popular main restaurant, La Meduse is stylishly modern with complete awareness of the island’s classic glamour; amid carved wooden Louis XV chairs and glass sculptures, it serves gourmet takes on the isle’s Mediterranean classics. The pool restaurant is mindfully less formal and there is an additional option to dine on the hotel’s private yacht, “Prince de Neufchatel.”

Note: this property is open April through October

You're here because

The island of Mykonos is relentlessly beautiful; you’re looking for a place in it’s sugar-cube dotted hills that’s embracing the island’s classic feel, but is erring on the side of modern and stylishly contemporary.

The Moment

The dark wooden antique bed contrasts sharply with the bright white molded walls. A heavy French mirror with a gilded frame hangs across from a bright abstract painting. Fresh flowers sit in a simple glass vase atop a cleanly carved table. The room’s window opens to the glittering turquoise water outside. Walking through the property, it’s impossible to not stop and inspect the details that weave together elements of modernity with the island’s ancient heritage.
