Oia, Santorini, Greece
Canaves Oia Hotel
Picture-perfect Greek retreat
What it is
A blissful, bright-white boutique.
What it isn't
A place to bring the kids. Canaves is wonderfully accommodating, but this place is for lovers.
What we think
From a family's collection of wine caves to a collection of luxury suites, Canaves has transformed one of Santorini’s highest cliffs into something out of a dream. The property is dual-sided, somewhat confusingly: Canaves Oia Hotel and Canaves Oia Suites are owned and run by the same local family and are both (despite the nomenclature) all-suite properties. They’re just a one-minute stroll away from one another and share restaurants and a spa. Canaves Oia Hotel is the eastern portion of the property—18 bright white suites cut directly into the cliff and presciently staggered so each suite enjoys an unobstructed view of Santorini’s famous caldera. Canaves translates to “cave houses,” but the suites are anything but cave-like. Domed ceilings, wooden accents and a minimalist aesthetic create an intimate, contemporary feel. Most suites have private plunge pools molded into their balconies—which are almost impossible to leave. Why? The view. It’s the real-life version of your phone’s travel-inspo background.
You're here because
You’re looking for the famed Santorini sunset. From this stylish cliffside perch, you’re guaranteed the most expansive and intimately private seat on the island.
The clinking of wine glasses and the town cathedral's bells officiate the sun’s descent. The sky, which had been entertaining all shades of blue this afternoon, fades into dusty rose, making the usually bright white sugar cube buildings blush pink.

On the cliffs of northwestern Santorini. It’s roughly a ten-minute walk into the center of town—just far enough that tourists are not streaming by the hotel’s entrance, but close enough that galleries and nightlife are just a stroll away. It’s just over 30 minutes to the international airport.
