Capri, Italy
Grand Hotel Quisisana
The Queen of Capri
What it is
An icon since 1845, with Mediterranean views and a spa that could soothe any post-scandal politician.
What it isn't
Modern—the only clean line here is the ocean’s horizon line. Expect throwback crystal, gilding, and tufting, and expect to love it all.
What we think
There’s no traffic allowed in central Capri, which means your arrival to this Italian icon will feel every bit as peaceful as it did when Hemingway himself showed up—you’ll sense an ocean breeze on the nape of your neck, rather than some taxi driver’s AC. It’s the perfect entrée into Quisisana’s otherworldly ambience, which has been turning heads since it launched as a restorative sanatorium in the 19th century (Quisiana translated is ‘here one heals’). Ask for a suite with a hydromassage tub and a prime overlook of the three Faraglioni rocks jutting from the sea.
You're here because
You’re too late to bask in the revelry of the Roman baths, but Quisiana has created a close second, a blue-and-white-and-marble-all-over spa that’s literally life changing. Treatments include four-handed massages, cedar ash scrubs and a mud mask made from marine sediments of France’s Brittany Sea.
The Moment
The only thing better than peering in the shop windows on Via Camerelle is peering out, from your candlelit table at the hotel’s Rendez-Vous restaurant. When the waiter sets the porcini mushroom tortelli with persil and alba truffles before you, you could swear you stopped traffic.
