Alpine Idyll

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

A Luxury Collection Hotel

What it is

A 1901 grande dame in the UNESCO-Heritage Dolomites, with a Swiss spa and heavenly vitality pool, five restaurants and 74 cinematic rooms and suites.

What it isn't

Skimping. An over-the-top indulgent American breakfast is included in your rate.

What we think

Ski bunnies from across the globe flock to this slope-side respite in their downy puffers for one reason: it’s a legend, having helped popularize everything from ice hockey to, in warmer seasons, tennis. (Proof it’s a jaw-dropper: it’s been cast in myriad Hollywood movies, including 1963’s “Pink Panther.”) Even the starter 280-square-foot Classic rooms are sumptuous, with ornate wood mouldings, parquet flooring and hand-painted walls; pop-pom-fringed draperies; and Carrara-marble lined baths. For a fully movie-worthy experience, book a Panoramic Suite; they have separate living rooms within their 484-square-foot floor plans, plus private balconies overlooking the mountains. While you’re here, don’t miss an aperitif (perhaps a French 75?) in the Cristallo Lounge Bar—where you’ll have a sweeping view of the alps from your hand-carved settee.

You're here because

It’s just as storybook and song-worthy as it was when Leo Tolstoy and Frank Sinatra stayed here (separately, of course).

The Moment

After a morning on the slopes, there’s no greater thrill than this: steeping in a waterfall-fed hot spring on the roof at the spa—a roof designed to look like the forest sprawled out before you.
