Vigilius Mountain Resort
Remote Modernism
What it is
A car-free mountaintop idyll with a 13,000 square foot spa, two fiercely Tyrolean restaurants, and endless alpine experiences (don’t miss forest bathing).
What it isn't
Ornate. The guest rooms are simple and streamlined, by design: to put the focus on the natural wonders beyond your windows.
What we think
There are no sprawling parking lots at Vigilius; they didn’t pave paradise. The only way here is to ascend by foot or, more commonly, their cable car—which has ferried guests to this altitude in the Tyrolean Alps since 1912. “Eco, not ego” was the rallying cry of the resort’s designer, architect Matteo Thun, which is why you’ll find an earthy elegance abounds. In 387 square foot Superior rooms, you’ll have floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Dolomites, a blonde wood clad bathtub, and a patio overlooking the naturescape. For more room to roam, we do recommend booking a Suite; they’re 775 square feet with separate living and dining spaces, plus your own full balcony or private woodland garden. Aaaah.
You're here because
You want to feel removed from modern life to immerse yourself in real life, and the mountain adventures here are everything you could ask for: including guided Nordic walks and snowshoeing.
The Moment
From your table on the sun terrace at Stube Ida, the only thing more warming than the solar rays are the dishes before you. The cannelloni with mountain mushrooms is nothing less than divine, and was cooked in a 100-year-old tile stove that has been here for more than a century.
