What it isn't

A new build. The hotel presides over an entire medieval town flanked by vineyards, and they restored and revamped as much of the original architecture as possible. Translation: a storybook stay that simply can’t be built new today.

What we think

All 29 rooms and 30 suites at Borgo San Felice are cinematic enough to have starred in Under the Tuscan Sun. Even the “starter” room here, a Premium Deluxe, is anything but basic, with its supple velvet and linen furniture; abundant window treatments that add to the castle effect; exposed beam ceilings; marble-lined bathrooms; and tufted headboards that adorn beds so soft you’ll have a hard time leaving them. To feel like you own the keys to the estate book La Legnaia Suite, which has its own garden chockablock with hydrangea and even an al fresco kitchen; or the fully separate Villa Casanova—which sleeps up to 18 people and has its own private pool.
