Villa Cora

Country in the city

What it is

Garden-ringed 19th-century villa reinvented for 21st-century tastes. Go ahead, borrow a Vespa.

What it isn't

Urban. Overlooking the Boboli Gardens, it’s about a 15-minute drive to the Duomo. But you won’t mind the distance when you’re soaking in Florence’s only swimming pool.

What we think

Emperor Napoleon III’s widow once bought this 1860 estate for herself, and it still befits royalty today, thanks to parquet floors buffed to a high sheen, trompe l’oeil frescoes and a garden filled with 100 varieties of rose. Among the 46 themed guest rooms are a neo-Moorish option and two located in the elaborate gardens of the adjacent park, La Follie. And while the property itself would wow any Marie Antoinette disciple, it’s the amenities and services that guarantee they’ll be back, from the year-round, oak-shrouded alfresco pool to the gratis taxi to whirl you around town. Go in summer to hit the sceney roof terrace, where a partnership with the J. de Telmont champagne house guarantees effervescent fun.

You're here because

You love the idea of a countryside retreat in Florence, but don’t want to be as far away as Fiesole.

The Moment

The beauty treatments at the spa may have been curated by famed London facialist Sarah Chapman, but the products are as local as can be: Officina Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, founded in 1612. Heavenly.

Restaurants & Bars
