Grand Hotel Portovenere

Waterfront Icon

What it is

A 17th century monastery perched on the Ligurian Sea, with modern yet sumptuous rooms, motorboat rentals, and a dazzling restaurant and bar.

What it isn't

Blah. Staffers have curated unforgettable experiences, whether you want to take a behind the scenes tour of oyster farms or do wine tasting with vintners in Riomaggiore.

What we think

The monks that lived in this grand dame centuries ago—when it was known as Covento di San Francesco—wouldn’t recognize it today. The soaring vaulted brickwork ceilings and eye candy views of the water are still there, but otherwise, it’s been remade for today’s well-heeled traveler, and stunning at every turn. You’ll find Malin + Goetz toiletries; sculptural headboards; and a color palette of soft pinks and Ligurian Sea blues. Many guest rooms have postcard worthy panoramas over the ancient cove, harbor and Palmaria Island from their private terraces…in other words, it’s what dreams are made of. Stop in at the aptly named Venus Bar for the best Negroni you’ve ever had, made all the more delicious at your waterfront table.

You're here because

The hotel has partnerships with private beach clubs nearby; say the word, and you can indulge in reserved daybeds and Instagrammable parasols on the waterfront.

The Moment

With abundant plants and daylight, Palmaria Restaurant feels a little like a secret garden…one that serves excellent food. Tonight, you’re tucking into rock octopus with black garlic mayonnaise and a sea urchin linguine. No regrets.

Restaurants & Bars

Palmaria - A refined atmosphere and candlelit dinners, first-class service, an original menu

Venus Bar - An ideal place to have a drink and relax at any point throughout the day.

Location

An hour and a half drive from Pisa International Airport. It’s worth crossing the water to visit the adjacent island’s nature preserve, Parco Naturale Regionale di Porto Venere, and its 19th century stone fort.
