47 Boutique Hotel

Art Deco Delight

What it is

A beloved 61-room retreat with a leafy roof garden and courtyard breakfast buffet.

What it isn't

Ye olde Rome. Rooms are as sleek as they come, in a palette of cool grays or blonde woods and bleach whites.

What we think

People rarely think of Art Deco when they conjure Rome, but something about the era’s inventive silhouettes suits the Eternal City perfectly. Here, you’ll find it epitomized in the gleaming parquet flooring, the streamlined wood headboards, and the curved, sculptural chairs that are for anything but sitting-as-usual. Book a room on the 5th floor and you’ll find your space an ode to painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1184-1920), whose works grace the walls, though it’s worth booking for the private terrace alone. Repeat guests love the hotel’s tricked out gym, thanks to the on-staff personal trainer, Kinesis by Technogym equipment at every turn, and steam room inspired by those of Ancient Rome. Last: the service here is impeccable, garnering rave reviews on every kvetching site.

You're here because

Unlike many Roman retreats, they’re family-oriented. Note the special welcome amenity for tots and baby options on the room service menu, upgraded Italian style (the fried chicken breast is served alla milanese, but yeah, it comes with french fries).

The Moment

You’re so zonked from pounding the cobblestones that you can’t bear to go out for dinner, so arrange a table at the hotel’s 47 Circus Roof Garden. What you find when you ascend the steps is too jaw-dropping to be believed: the entire terra-cotta roofed skyline stretching before you, twinkling in the twilight. The only thing sweeter: the tiramisu and pavlova with berries you order for dessert.

Restaurants & Bars

The Circus Roof Garden Restaurant - Mediterranean cuisine

Words In Freedom - Italian bistro

Location

Slung between Circus Maximum and Piazza Venezia, the hotel is within walking distance of any Roman sight you could ever hope to see, including the Colosseum and the “new” (for Ancient Rome) circa 1732 Trevi Fountain.
