J.K. Place Roma

La Dolce Vita in Central Rome

What it is

A design-minded boutique hotel where La Dolce Vita reigns

What it isn't

Accommodations with all the fixings- no gym and no spa, though plenty of reason to hang out on the premises

What we think

J.K. Place Roma, the third of the J.K. Place sister properties, is inspired, bijou and sitting in the limelight of Michele Bönan’s talent. The 30 rooms are housed in the 19th century shell of what was once the architecture school of the Sapienza University of Rome. Bönan preserved most of the building’s original architecture, but opened up the former classrooms to create guest rooms that are spacious by any city’s standards. The smart 1960s Dolce Vita décor is ever-mindfully mixed with the hallmarks of Rome. Grey and ivory studio couches and club chairs (over-stuffed and fond of obtuse angles) mix with classic carved busts and ink-streaked marble mantels. The guest rooms and suites are individually decorated, rosewood four-poster beds reach up to the high ceilings, Massimo Listri photographs hang from the walls, striped Italian marble bathrooms where glass, chrome and mirror all shine, and all rooms are either in grey-scale neutrals or rich purples and jades. The common spaces would be fitting setting for Anita Ekberg to go over notes with Fellini- boldly fashionable and utterly iconic. Within saffron taffeta-covered walls and under a sputnik chandelier, JKCafe Lounge, Bar & Restaurant dishes out Italian classics. Up on on the rooftop, the garden bar offers not only cocktails that marry unexpectedly welcome taste profiles (like the J.K. Sour: a house cocktail of Amaretto, passion fruit and lemon), but also a welcome slice of quiet after a day exploring Rome’s rapidly beating heart.

You're here because

Design is important; relevant, handsome and confident are the hallmarks of style and they should be the part of where you stay.

The Moment

It’s a narrow path - one of the medieval alleys that twist through the city’s most photogenic scenes. Happy to separate from the crowds at the Spanish Steps, the side street’s quiet is more than welcome. Pushing open the front door, greeted immediately, relieved of bags and handed prosecco and olives, it takes a moment to register the elevator, hidden behind mirrored paneling.
