Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria
What it is
A hilltop icon with 370 rooms on 15 lush acres, with four pools, a spa with a Turkish bath and La Prairie treatments, plus the only 3-starred Michelin restaurant in Rome.
What it isn't
Boring. Staffers have curated a host of When in Rome exploits, from Gladiator Training to Italian supercar drives to insider neighborhood food tours.
What we think
Perched on Monte Mario, Rome Cavalieri has been turning the heads of even the most well-heeled guests since 1963 (note the $8 million triptych by 18th century painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in the Tiepolo Lounge & Terrace). Guest rooms are just as exquisite as you’d imagine, with sweeping floor plans (starting at 538 square feet) and dreamy, timeless interior design, like ornate woodwork and ornately draped window treatments. We’d suggest booking a suite; each is stocked with centuries-old art pieces, private terraces that will drop your jaw, and, if you opt for the Planetarium Suite, Swarovski crystal bathroom fixtures and an al fresco jacuzzi that peeps out on St. Peter’s Basilica. Not even Audrey Hepburn had it this good when she filmed 1953’s “Roman Holiday.”
You're here because
The resort rolls out the proverbial red carpet for kids, who can go on treasure hunts in Villa Borghese or take private gladiator classes in costume. Pets are VIPs, too, with their own menus and even pawfect spa offerings.
You’ve never been to a three Michelin-starred restaurant before—the best of the best— and yes, you can notice a difference. Every bite you take at La Pergola, from the deep-fried zucchini flower with caviar and saffron consomme to the venison with polenta and black truffle—sends you into the stratosphere.
