Pantelleria, Strait of Sicily
Sikelia
Island Time
What it is
A hush-hush hideaway on a little-known Italian island, with 19 volcanic-rock-walled rooms, an intimate spa, and daybed-flanked outdoor pool.
What it isn't
Rustic. Guests will have fast Wifi, Frette linens, iPod docks, Morettino coffee machines, satellite TV and even toiletries by Hermès.
What we think
For an artful experience that looks like it was torn from the pages of Architectural Digest, look no further. Sikelia is built within the region’s centuries-old, cave-like dammusi dwellings with domed roofs. Each guest room evokes a poetic sensibility unlike anywhere else in Italy—thanks to modernist custom furniture and raw, earthy finishes (not to mention terraces that peep out on the waters below). Be sure to stop in at the primary restaurant, Thema, for Sicilian fare with a whiff of inspiration from the Island of Pantelleria’s neighbor, Africa...such as tiramisu studded with capers.
You're here because
The hotel provides maid service twice daily, room service and even butler service upon request. Heaven.
The Moment
After dipping into glass-clear waters in empty sea coves, you decide it’s time to explore the shore properly: by local fishing boat. So you hop on the hotel’s own, watching the landscape change with a glass of wine in your hand—and finding it as transfixing as the gauzy hues of dusk.
