Trieste, Italy
Grand Hotel Duchi D’Aosta
Storied Stunner
What it is
A 1908 grande dame reborn for today with a two Michelin starred restaurant, gleaming bar, mosaic-lined pool and famously over-the-top-delightful breakfasts.
What it isn't
Poorly serviced. This hotel knows how to pamper, with a complimentary minibar in each room, 24-hour room service, and a concierge that knows every insider experience in town.
What we think
When you’re in Trieste—once home to James Joyce, who wrote Ulysses here—you would be wise to stay in the most soulful hotel you can find, and this is among the best in town. Even the most basic room option at the aptly named Grand Hotel is charming to the core, with tassels and pom poms on the window treatments; ornate upholstery fabrics; and must-have amenities (like individually controlled air conditioning). For a stay worthy of your own epic, book the James Joyce Suite; it has a rich gold and merlot red color palette, two bathrooms (!), a walk-in wardrobe and includes a bottle of prosecco upon your arrival. Pop!
You're here because
Breakfast is included in your stay at the hotel’s Harry’s Bistro, and it is a jaw-dropper: the type of endless spread that’s so indulgent it’s worth your trip to Italy, with local meats and cheeses, buttery fresh baked pastries and jams, and so much more.
The Moment
The Michelin-starred restaurant here should have its own Michelin galaxy…a fact that’s apparent to you the second you take a bite of your toast adorned with shrimp, wasabi, salad and dill. Nothing so healthy has ever tasted so utterly decadent, and you love it.
