What we think

When you’re in Trieste—once home to James Joyce, who wrote Ulysses here—you would be wise to stay in the most soulful hotel you can find, and this is among the best in town. Even the most basic room option at the aptly named Grand Hotel is charming to the core, with tassels and pom poms on the window treatments; ornate upholstery fabrics; and must-have amenities (like individually controlled air conditioning). For a stay worthy of your own epic, book the James Joyce Suite; it has a rich gold and merlot red color palette, two bathrooms (!), a walk-in wardrobe and includes a bottle of prosecco upon your arrival. Pop!
