L'Andana

From Medici to Ducasse in Maremma wine country

What it is

A rural estate that’s decadently stocked and perfectly Tuscan.

What it isn't

An isolated, antique-y country escape. L’Andana may be a destination hotel, but it’s not short on luxury nor sophistication.

What we think

Set on 1,200 acres of olive trees and vineyards, L’Andana is a joint effort by the Moretti family and acclaimed Alain Ducasse- here he plays both chef and hotelier. Technically a tenuta, or working ranch (an onsite shop sells the estate’s vintages and hand-pressed olive oil,) the main villa was constructed in the early 1800s for Grand Duke Leopold II as a summer residence. The preference for luxury is still very much apparent- from the half-mile, Cyprus-lined entry lane, to the roman-style black-slate spa, to the interiors by Ettore Mochetti, the Italian editor of Architectural Digest. The 33 guest rooms are styled with traditional French and Italian design, but nothing is overdone or out of place - the super high-ceilings, ornate motifs on linens, marble columns topped with blown glass vases and carved wooden chairs look right at home in the rustic villa. Outside of the storybook setting, though, the pull of this place is Ducasse. His collection of Michelin stars got a little brighter with Trattoria Toscana. A coveted stop for well-heeled foodies, the restaurant’s menu changes daily- always featuring ingredients grown on the grounds of the hotel. In addition to making the estate’s food, the chefs host cooking classes taught in the kitchens. The hotel is secluded in the countryside, but deceivingly so: it’s just over four miles from some of Italy’s best sandy beaches and a short drive from Etruscan ruins.

You're here because

You travel all the way to the source for a full-fledged experience, not just around the block for the latest celebrity chef opening.

The Moment

As your driver coasts up the Cyprus-lined lane, the main villa glows in the last rays of afternoon. Windows cracked, the heady scent of sun-warmed fields floats into the car, comforting with a subtle, salty tint from the Mediterranean.
