Fiesole, Italy
Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel
Michelangelo's greatest creation
What it is
A peaceful countryside escape an arm’s length from Florence.
What it isn't
A walkable home base for sightseeing or shopping: Florence is about a 20-minute drive away.
What we think
Villa San Michele is a converted 15th-century monastery—its facade has been attributed to Michelangelo—in the hills above Florence. With its swimming pool and extensive gardens, it’s ideal for those who crave a quiet retreat after a day jostling Florence’s swarms of sightseers (or, for that matter, exploring the Tuscan countryside). The views of the city’s terra cotta roofs and the incomparable Duomo provide a Room With A View romance, but the excellent kid’s Smile Club also makes it a great spot for families. La Loggia serves classic Tuscan cuisine, and has a terrific cooking school attached. The 46 rooms and suites are elegant in beige and pastel hues with rich wood accents.
You're here because
You’re a return visitor to the city and don’t mind keeping it a distance. Or you (and your family) are looking for a Tuscan resort with an extraordinary “activity” (that is, Florence) out the back door.
The Moment
A plate of homemade pasta with duck ragu and Pecorino in front of you at La Loggia restaurant, you gaze out towards the panorama of the Renaissance city and Brunelleschi’s dome.
