San Marco, Venice
The Gritti Palace
A Luxury Collection Hotel
What it is
A restored 15th-century palazzo that is equal parts authentic, grand and romantic.
What it isn't
For those looking to be hidden away from the city’s crowds.
What we think
Perched right on the Grand Canal, the Gritti Palace has been a meeting place for Venetian nobility since the 15th century. Despite its lengthy life, a recent renovation by Starwood has made this hotel as shiny and new as ever. A large team of experts worked around the clock to restore the gorgeous Murano chandeliers and Rubelli fabrics that adorn the property. It is this, and the grade-A location on the canal, that make this the perfect hotel choice for anyone looking to experience the history of Venice’s elite. The 103 rooms and suites are just as authentic and some of the more reasonably sized rooms in the city. If it’s your first time to Venice, it’ll pay to upgrade to a Venetian Room where the decor will transport you to an older time; but if you want a view of the canal, a Landmark Grand Canal Room is your clear choice. Also on property are a bar and restaurant, which are long-standing social hubs for well-heeled locals, but more importantly they are the ideal spots to enjoy views of the Grand Canal. If you’re a foodie, definitely try a class in the Gritti Palace Epicurean School.
