Icon infused with contemporary glamour

What it is

A legendary beachfront hotel given a chic makeover

What it isn't

Peaceful and quiet. The pool scene is a huge attraction.

What we think

In the Roaring Twenties, the royal family of Monaco decided to open a hotel on the sea just over the French border, hiring American socialite Elsa Maxwell to bring the right crowd. The Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel opened in 1929, its “Riviera Red” façade becoming an instant icon, as did the Olympic-size saltwater pool. Eight decades later, an imaginative renovation led by interior designer India Mahdavi ensured the hotel a spot in the jetsetter’s firmament. Mahdavi reinforced the nautical theme in the 40 rooms with blue-and-white striped fabrics, rounded walls and porthole-like windows; Cocteau-inspired murals are a nod to the area’s artistic heritage. The swimming pool is as glamorous as ever, surrounded by bright white parasols, lounge chairs and beautiful people. Guests also have access to the pools at the Societé des Bains de Mer’s three neighboring hotels, as well as the Thermes Marins fitness complex and spa, tennis at the Monte Carlo Country Club, preferred tee times at the golf club and, of course, the Casino. At Elsa, the restaurant named in Maxwell’s honor, chef Paolo Sari adds both French and Italian touches to organic and locally sourced ingredients, with dishes like spaghetti with sea urchin roe, or roasted red mullet with fava bean puree. There’s also a small spa run by La Prairie.

Note: Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel is open seasonally from March to October.
