Pulitzer Amsterdam

History, revised

What it is

A coterie of 25 17th-century canal houses knitted into a stylish hideaway.

What it isn't

Business-y or cold. Expect to feel instantly at home.

What we think

When designer Jacu Strauss—a protégé of Tom Dixon—was working on the 2016 revamp of this iconic hotel, he reportedly slept in every room to get each one exactly right. That’s the kind of attention to detail you’ll notice here, in a hotel founded by the grandson of THAT Pulitzer. Nearly every corner is an Instagrammable moment, from the hand-carved wooden rocking horses in the garden to the sculpture of vintage books in the Book Collector’s Suite. Singletons and couples love the property for its canal-side Art Deco–inspired cocktail bar (order the Moneypenny, with gin, lychee and chai syrup); families with young kids love the property for its entirely lovely children’s amenities, including a playground, nanny service and personalized pillow cases.

You're here because

You prefer a residential feel without the worries that come with booking through sites like Airbnb.

The Moment

The hotel maintains a stable of bicycles, but this evening you opt to board the 1909 teak and brass salon boat for a 75-minute cruise on the canal.

Restaurants & Bars

Jansz - a quietly elegant neighborhood restaurant with an easy-going Dutch attitude. The menu features beautifully crafted modern classics that respect the simplicity of quality produce and ingredients.

Pause - a garden café in the heart of the tranquil gardens. Recharge with an espresso brewed to perfection or plan for the day on the laid-back terrace.

Pulitzer’s Bar - a classic hotel bar, with sumptuous furnishings and a rich and intimate atmosphere. Sip on classic coctails and the finest beverages while enjoying views over the canals.

Location

In the Nine Streets neighborhood, just 25 minutes from the airport by taxi, but mere steps from the Anne Frank House. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are about a mile away.
