The Alpina Gstaad
What it is
A (fairly) new and extremely luxe Alpine lodge.
What it isn't
Overwhelming. With 56 rooms, it’s exactly the right size for consistent perfection.
What we think
Scions of Swiss banking fortunes sighed with audible delight when the Alpina Gstaad opened—it was the first luxury hotel to break ground in Gstaad in more than a century. And what a hotel it is: home to abundant amenities, from a Baroque 1780 ceiling salvaged by an antique dealer (now installed above the grand staircase) to a custom Fiat (courtesy of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation) whose paint job changes hues along with the outside temperature. Each and every one of those 56 guest rooms has a private terrace overlooking the Alps; ask for a Grand Luxe Suite for a fireplace made of local stone and multiple living areas.
You're here because
If you have your druthers (and you do), you always choose a hotel with a Six Senses Spa, and the Alpina Gstaad’s is among the best, with a cave for couple’s treatments and a hammam to rival any you’ve seen in Turkey.
On vacation, there’s only one thing more divine than having two Michelin-starred restaurants right under your roof: an Art Deco Havana-inspired cigar lounge with a walk-in humidor. You breathe deep and an om escapes your lips—who needs yoga among sweet tobacco-scented air?
An hour and 20 minute drive from the nearest international airport, Bern-Belp, but mere steps from the ski slopes. Zurich Airport is a three-hour ride.
