What we think

Architect Peter Zumthor has a bevy of bona fides—among them the Pritzker Prize—but the project that travelers acclaim most is the thermal baths he designed here, comprised of 60,000 slabs of locally quarried quartzite and 86-degree mineral water flowing from St. Peter’s Spring. Road-weary vagabonds come from across the globe for the Vals hot stone ritual, muslin herbal wraps or just a simple soak. The hotel’s 91 guest rooms—designed by various boldface names, including Zumthor, Thom Mayne and Tadao Ando—are every bit as soothing; we prefer the Swiss oak paneled suite by Kengo Kuma, a womb-like, modernist version of a ski chalet.

Location

A two-hour drive from Zurich, or a blink-and-you-miss-it helicopter ride. If you don’t love riding in a chopper, the hotel can easily send a limousine to collect you from any destination you desire.
