Badrutt's Palace Hotel

Legend on the Lake

What it is

An 1896 icon with 156 ornate rooms (each one with a lake or village view), plus an ayurvedic spa and highly Instagrammable indoor and outdoor pools.

What it isn't

Peckish. Five toothsome restaurants here include everything sceney Veranda, an al fresco spot overlooking the lake and surrounding Alps, and Gelateria Palace, where Chef-Pâtissier Stefan Gerber’s housemade (daily!) ice creams and gelatos are worth waiting in line for.

What we think

Audrey Hepburn was here. Marlene Dietrich and Alfred Hitchcock, too. Globetrotting cognoscenti still flock to Badrutt’s Palace today (and not just because their fleet of Rolls Royces include one that belonged to Queen Elizabeth). Every moment is a Swiss fever dream sprung to life, from the horseback rides at Engadin River Ranch to the ice skating on their perfectly maintained rink. Guest rooms are timelessly beautiful, with twinkling crystal chandeliers and golden gilt accessories. Because starter rooms can feel a little snug (starting at average 226 square feet), unless you’re traveling alone we’d recommend splurging on a Deluxe Junior Suite, with a much bigger floor plan at average 517-square-feet, including a separate sitting room that peeps out on either bustling St. Moritz village or Via Serlas—a.k.a. The town’s answer to Rodeo Drive.

You're here because

The more than centuries-old hotel will be happy to let you host a party, or even a romantic dinner for two, in their “secret places”—hidden, subterranean-feeling wine cellars not open to the public. Cue the truffle fondue!

The Moment

After a refreshing dip in the hotel’s mountainside indoor infinity pool, complete with a waterfall and even a granite rock you can dive from, you’re ready to treat yourself at the spa. On the docket: an Alpine salt crystal body scrub and oxygen facial. Heaven.
