The Chedi Andermatt

Slopeside Splendor

What it is

An Asian-inspired 123-room ski lodge designed by starchitect Jean-Michel Gathy.

What it isn't

Hands-off. Guest pampering includes ski butlers who’ll carry your skis to the slopes (and offer expert powder intel).

What we think

Aesthetes and foodies alike beeline to this award-winning ski lodge in the charm-stocked village of Andermatt. For one thing, the generously sized rooms (starting at 570-square-feet) are as exquisite as anyone could imagine, with made-in-Sweden Hastens beds, flickering fireplaces, amenities by Acqua di Parma, and murals inspired by 17th-century Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. And then there’s the food, helmed by executive chef Dietmar Sawyere: four restaurants—including a wine and cigar library and a sushi boite—and The Restaurant, which has garnered a Michelin star (don’t miss the 16-foot high glass walled wine and cheese cellar). Unsurprisingly, the lodge’s nearly 9,000-square-foot spa is equally exquisite, complete with a Tibetan relaxation lounge and Eurasian inflected treatments, such as Thai-Style foot massages and Hungarian moor mud scrubs.

You're here because

Unlike most alpine ski lodges, the Chedi has a pool—and what a pool it is, with infinity edges, an adjacent fireplace and bar, and glass walls along one side that look over deep pine forests.

The Moment

As winter descends, The Chedi’s many repeat guests start to feel their hearts calling them back here—to ski, yes, but also to grab dinner in the Chalet, a traditionalist’s Swiss wood cabin complete with red and white checked tablecloths in the lodge’s courtyard. When your waiter sets a bowl of truffled fondue at your table alongside the air-dried sausage and sourdough, you smile as big as Heidi herself.
