Amanruya

Tranquil romance by the Aegean

What it is

A quiet, exceptionally romantic retreat on the Aegean coast.

What it isn't

Activity-packed. You can day-trip it to Bodrum and Ephesus, but there's not much to do on-property besides swim, spa and snooze.

What we think

Like all Aman properties, Amanruya marries the brand’s signature stately minimalism to local traditions. The resort's 36 freestanding villas overlook the Aegean from the craggy, cypress-dotted hillside, fitting so seamlessly into the landscape you'd be forgiven for thinking they've been here since Homeric times. Hewn from local rock, the elegant white and gray cottages have private gardens, plunge pool and outdoor showers. The Turkish marble gleams; dark mahogany beams criss-cross the ceiling; billowing drapery surrounds the four-poster bed. The bathroom is a seemingly endless expanse of white marble, down to the soap and shampoo bottles. Paths made of hand-laid pebble meander the property, passing through rock gardens and stands of fir and olive trees (which provide the resort's olive oil) and eventually ending at a sheltered beach. There is no formal dining area: Instead, small private pavilions, gardens and nooks offer guests intimate spaces to dine on meze platters, fresh bread and other locally inspired dishes.

Seasonal closure: November through March.

You're here because

You want to experience a vacation by the Aegean, but not the loud and crowded scene that mars other Turkish and Greek resorts. And you adore the peaceful atmosphere, exquisite service and exclusive air that typify the Aman experience.

The Moment

The server at lunch explained that the scalloped coves of the surrounding coastline were the original sites of Homer’s epics, the place of ancient oracles and temples erected to the gods. Looking out at the water from your private stone courtyard, you easily imagine the ancients’ ships coming ashore in search of divine inspiration.

Restaurants & Bars

There are four Dining Pavilions serving traditional Turkish foods, continental fare and Asian-inspired dishes (Thai and Indonesian) including stir-fries, salads and curries. Each venue enjoys a different setting and sea views.
