Athenaeum Hotel & Residences

A stylish, welcoming Mayfair boutique

What it is

A friendly, stylish Mayfair pad away from home.

What it isn't

One of London’s gilded Grande Dames.

What we think

The Art Deco building sports a “living wall,” a vertical garden that sprawls up eight floors and nicely mirrors Green Park just across Piccadilly. While the doorman is wearing a tophat and the buzzing lobby is decked out in brass and wood shined into verifiable mirrors, the 164 rooms, suites, apartments and common spaces are not styled like London's Old World palaces. Instead, they’re handsome and lean towards 1960s modern elegance - without becoming Mad Med sets.

The family owned hotel is known for their welcoming air: they’re one of the only hotels in London that gives guests free wifi, complimentary snacks from the minibar, their room service has no cut off, if (on the odd chance) you’re craving something that’s not on the restaurant’s contemporary British menu, they’ll happily cook what you’re looking for and if you’re travelling with children, they make sure that their dedicated Kids' Concierge is there to assist in any and all requests - honestly embracing the idea the nothing is too much trouble.

In addition to the British restaurant, the hotel hosts an afternoon tea in the Garden Room that requires an advance booking. There's also a whisky bar on the property with 300 varieties of the amber spirit.

You're here because

You want something central, but not on the busiest corner. You want something that’s warm and feels like home without checking into a frilly B&B. You want something elegant, discreet and, simply, friendly.

The Moment

Afternoon tea in the Garden Room is well on its way. Sinking into the overstuffed armchair, three-tiered trays of scones, jams, clotted cream and savory snacks dot the tables around you. The hotel, for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 150th Anniversary, is offering a Mad Hatter’s Tea. A cart stacked with clock cakes, mushroom meringues, chocolate tea cups, and a selection of fascinators makes its way toward your giggling table.

Restaurants & Bars

- Galvin At The Athenaeum - Featuring modern British cuisine by Michelin-starred London chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin

- Afternoon Tea At The Athenaeum - Classic British Tea offering an extravagant collection of fine teas, sandwiches and scones

- The Bar At The Athenaeum - Signature cocktails in an elegant, intimate setting

Location

The Athenaeum is located across Piccadilly from Green Park, with Hyde Park and Knightsbridge a short walk to the west. It’s nicely central without being on the main bustling drag of Park Lane.

A ten minute walk east on Piccadilly brings you to the Royal Academy, where prominent artists make, exhibit and debate art. Shepherd Market is two blocks away from the hotel - the village square has popular bistros, Victorian pubs and a host of local boutiques that sell everything from traditional leather luggage to luxury handbags and jewelry.
