The Berkeley

Modern Elegance

What it is

A 19th century hotel reborn for today’s tastes, with streamlined yet sumptuous guest rooms, six OTT restaurants and an organic spa with a rooftop pool and bar.

What it isn't

Ye olde England. This hideaway would wow even the most tough to please Middleton with its luxe interiors, thanks to known designers like David Collins, Michelle Wu and André Fu.

What we think

Glam may be a four letter word, but it doesn’t begin to describe the experience in even the “starter” rooms here. The Classic Rooms are outfitted with mini bars stocked with U.K.-made nibbles; iPod docking stations, Nespresso machines and Dyson hairdryers; plus a marble-lined bathroom. But treat yourself to a suite and your jaw may actually hit the floor. The Grand Terrace Suite has floor to ceiling glass doors that open onto a leafy terrace overlooking St. Paul’s Knightsbridge church (though we won’t be surprised if you spend all your time in your mammoth walk-in closet, or the sculptural tub in a bathroom outfitted with a Japanese Toto toilet). Be sure to stop in at the Berkeley Shop, among the best hotel boutiques on the planet with souvenirs that range from fluffy children’s bathrobes to porcelain China sets by Bernardaud.

You're here because

You’re a glutenholic, and famed French pastry chef Cédric Grolet has launched his first patisserie outside Paris here. (Order a trompe-l’oeil flower cake).

The Moment

In a city with a profusion of afternoon tea options, The Berkeley’s ranks. On the couture fashion-inspired menu? A “Balenciaga” cheesecake with a chocolate hat; cassis mousse with blackcurrant jelly adorned with “Stella McCarthey’s” jumpsuit; and a red velvet mascarpone mousse with a riding hat that took “Gucci” as its muse.
