Grantley Hall

Stately Grandeur

What it is

A 17th century Palladian-style estate transformed into an exquisite 47-room hotel, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, expansive spa complete with a snow room and two pools.

What it isn't

Aesthetically expected. Sure, you can belly up to an oak paneled bar worthy of Oscar Wilde at the Norton Bar & Courtyard, but you can also dine on note-perfect kimchi fritters and bao under the glowing ceilings at locavore Asian boîte EightyEight.

What we think

If Catherine, Princess of Wales, were reborn as a British country estate, she would be this one: embracing perfectly manicured tradition while pushing the proverbial envelope just a notch. Even the beginning room category, Deluxe Rooms, are worthy of a Middleton, with their Italian marble-lined bathrooms, spa-like gold and blue color palette, sumptuous details (including a robe menu and pillow menu) and generous floor plans that start at 409 square feet. For an even roomier space, we love the Junior Suites, which clock in at 628 square feet and are fitted with deep soaking tubs and living rooms with fireplaces. The aptly named Royal Suite is also a two floored stunner, with its panorama over the verdant gardens and River Skell.

You're here because

Their afternoon tea service is cinematic perfection—served in the estate’s Jane Austen-level Main Hall with touches that will elicit a smile, like passion fruit rum baba’s in the form of country sheep.

The Moment

Yorkshire’s own star chef Shaun Rankin earned a Michelin star here at his namesake restaurant, where he employs the region’s best fare like a wizard. This dinner feels as enchanting as your morning walk in the dew-dotted garden thanks to dishes like aged sirloin with wild garlic and a Yorkshire rhubarb souffle.

Location

In the rolling hills of Yorkshire, less than two hours from Manchester and only 50 minutes from Leeds. While you’re here, it’s well worth making the 9 minute drive to Brimham Rocks—otherworldly rock formations born before the dinosaurs, some 400 million years ago.
