What we think

There is not a whiff of stuffiness in this new Edinburg hotel, which combines the best of old (eye candy architecture from the 19th century) with new (sculptural modern furniture and art at every turn). Guest rooms feel nearly as sprawling as Edinburgh Castle, thanks to sliding doors that close-off your sleeping space from your dressing room, the latter equipped with yoga mats, a vanity, and plenty of soft LED lighting to help you prep for your daily adventures in style. Book a Chamber King Terrace to have your own private al fresco seating area and a spa-like bathroom with a rainfall shower, or Edward’s Suite, which feels a little like an age-old castle garret room thanks to its lofted sleeping space with wood-paneled walls. While you’re here, be sure to indulge in afternoon tea at Commons Club for only-in-Scotland treats like vegetarian haggis fritters and Belhaven smoked salmon and sweetcorn muffins with dill creme fraiche.
