Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian

Grandest Grande Dame

What it is

A legendary 1903 hotel within a former railway station, with classical interiors, restaurants helmed by star chefs, and spa and pool peering out on Edinburgh Castle.

What it isn't

Thirsty. The hotel’s Caley’s Bar would satisfy devoted whiskey lover King Charles III himself with their library of tipples 100-brands deep.

What we think

If the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh—The Caledonian had a middle name, it would be “grandeur.” Originally constructed as a station for the Caledonian Railway, the red sandstone exterior has welcomed countless generations of travelers on a bon voyage—but still feels incredibly fresh. We adore the 226 square foot Carriage Rooms, which feel a little like a sleeper car complete with polished burr veneer walls and a cozy palette of chocolate browns and plaids. The King Premier Room with Castle View is equally charming, with its tufted headboard, sitting area and a Scottish Crossbill’s panorama over the circa 11th century Edinburgh Castle. Suites themed around iconic Scots—including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Robert Louis Stevenson—are expansive, with custom, dreamy interiors that feel especially cinematic. Whichever room you pick, expect plentiful perks, including a Nespresso coffee machine, flatscreen TV, and plush robes and slippers for raiding the curated minibar.

You're here because

You live for a spa day, and this one has it all: a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, two-floor gym, and a mosaic-tile lined indoor pool that peers out on the castle and cityscape.

The Moment

Chef Dean Banks may have honed his knives in Michelin-starred kitchens across the globe, but he grew up in the Scottish fishing village of Smokie—and his obsession with local foodstuffs is turned into haute art right before your eyes. The corn and sunflower cobbler and Warrendale Waghu may just be your favorite parts of the tasting menu…until the next course, that is.

Restaurants & Bars

Dean Banks at The Pompadour - Signature 7-course tasting menu showcasing the best Scottish produce from land and sea.

Grazing by Mark Greenaway - Relaxed and welcoming dining environment created by celebrated Edinburgh chef Mark Greenaway.

Peacock Alley - A comfortable lounge for residents to treat as their own, for breakfast, light lunch or afternoon tea.

The Caley Bar - Savor pre-diner drinks, sip on custom cocktails, or sample some of the finest whiskies Scotland has to offer.

Just across the road from Edinburgh Castle, within walking distance of the most must-see Edinburgh sights, including the Scottish National Gallery (where the collection includes da Vincis and Picasso’s alike).
