Hotel Nelligan

Grand Dame of the North

What it is

A 105-room sanctuary tucked within four 1850s homes, with three locally-beloved restaurants (including a rooftop bar).

What it isn't

Lacking its original architectural elan. Renovations to the property preserved its four-story atrium and original brick walls.

What we think

If you picture Canada as a cold, desolate place, Hotel Nelligan is a cozy rebuttal. Rooms are fitted with sculptural furniture, down comforters and pillows you’ll sink into, plus terry cloth robes that say “Vacay” at a glance. (Each one has a king sized bed—which makes sense in the land of truly wide open spaces). Montrealer locavores flock to Verses restaurant and wine bar for regionally sourced fare; dishes may include everything from salmon gravlax with maple syrup and orange jelly and local duck breast with parsnips, yellow beets, Morello cherries and Port sauce. Did we mention they have live jazz musicians trilling into the night every Thursday through Saturday?

You're here because

You’ve got a thing for rooftop bars, and Terrasse Nelligan is among the best you’ve seen—peeping out on Notre-Dame Basilica and famous for their clear sangria (made with peach Schnapps, white cranberry juice and Hungaria).

The Moment

You’ve never known brunch could be so fun—until you sat at Mechant Boeuf. DJ’s spinning, bottomless mimosas, and breakfast poutine on the menu? It’s an edible heaven—with piping hot donut holes for dessert.
