Le Mount Stephen

Urban Elite

What it is

A new 90-room hideaway with ultra-luxe amenities (including a spa) tucked within the circa 1880 former estate of Lord George Stephen.

What it isn't

Phoning it in on historical lore. Stephen was once the President of the Bank of Montreal, the first President of Canadian Pacific Railway, and even a fashion-industry kingpen. In other words, he was highly caffeinated.

What we think

Canadians are a resilient sort, but they’re not opposed to some serious pampering now and again. At Le Mount Stephen, the on-site spa has perfected everything from microdermabrasion facials to osteopathy and Thai herbal massages. But it’s the rooms that really wow. They’re the very definition of “tricked out,” with Japanese Toto toilets, chromotherapy rainforest showers, touch-panel Crestron climate and lighting controls, heated floors and window de-foggers in the bathroom, and even custom Harlequin divine beds, which can fold to make you feel like you’re sleeping in #zerogravity. Not bad, Oh Canada!

You're here because

There’s a British restaurant on-site, Bar George, that’s actually delicious, making guests rethink British food. On the menu: halibut with curried squash and white bean cassoulet, plus oysters Rockefeller with Pernod and smoked cheddar. Divine.

The Moment

Curled up next to the original blonde wood and black marble fireplace in Bar George, you decide to linger into the wee hours. Montrealers have packed the house, and they don’t look like they’ll be leaving any time soon. Tonight, you’re having a slew of cocktails by the name of Surly Old Uncle. With Pimm’s No. 1, vermouth rouge, gin Tanqueray and pamplemousse—you’ve never felt less surly.

Location

In the midst of Montreal’s Golden Square Mile, just a two block walk from The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and McGill University. Don’t miss the Canadian Centre for Architecture, especially if you’re an aesthete; you’ll see exhibitions like Building a New World, on “Amerikanism” in Russian Architecture between 1876 and 1991.
