The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal

An Icon Reborn

What it is

A 1912 grande dame fresh from a $200-million renovation (yes, there’s a rooftop saltwater pool).

What it isn't

Overly urban. Yes, you’re on Montreal’s buzzing Sherbrooke street, but the hotel’s manicured gardens and pond have the feel of a spa sanctuary.

What we think

Usually, when a glamazon is more than 100 years old, she’s exhausted. Not so Ritz-Carlton Montreal—the energizer bunny of exquisite Quebecois hotels. Just reborn with of-the-moment interiors, you’ll find guest rooms more spacious than any newly built property—starting at a whopping 600 square feet, and high tech enough to wow Zuckerberg himself (the room will remember your temperature preferences and act accordingly at any Ritz-Carlton property; and yes, there’s a Japanese Toto toilet in the bathroom). A marble bathroom with a rain shower and power steam, deep soaking tub, pillow menu (!), Asprey amenities and nightly turn-down service keep you pampered. All the coddling continues in the hotel’s Spa St. James, renowned for its hammam and its blissful signature treatments that nod to your Canadian locale (hot stone and maple sugar massage? Sounds sweet.)

You're here because

The hotel’s food options are, unsurprisingly, among the best in the entire city. You can tuck into rhubarb ricard frozen parfaits at Maison Boulud (by Chef Daniel Boulud), hit up the ornate Dom Pérignon Champagne Bar (exactly as fizzingly fabulous as it sounds—especially after one sip of Louis Roederer Brut Premier), or stay in and order room service like the star you are—24/7.

The Moment

You’re Exhausted—with a capital E—from your day of shopping til you literally drop. So you cannot believe how delightful the hotel’s afternoon tea, served since 1912 in the frescoed and barrel-ceilinged Palm Court, is. You take a sip of your Jasmine Mist green tea and nibble on your smoked salmon and dill cream finger sandwich, and feel yourself starting to perk up like a freshly watered orchid. Time to hit the rooftop saltwater pool and take in a view of the cityscape? Indeed.
