Andaz Ottawa Byward Market

Capital Queen

What it is

A sleek, 200-room high-rise hotel with a 16th floor rooftop bar.

What it isn't

Viewless. You’ll likely have a prime overlook of an Ottawa icon, be it the Gatineau Hills or the circa 1859 Parliament Building.

What we think

The temperature once reached negative 38 degrees in Ottawa (back in 1933). And while that’s far from the norm today, the designers behind Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market—Canadian firm Mason Studio—made sure to cozify each space’s thoroughly modernist lines. Rooms feature floor to ceiling windows peeping out on the cityscape along with plenty of warm blonde wood, plush upholstery and snug texture, plus perks galore (rainfall showers, walk-in closets, and 400-thread-count sheets you won’t be able to pry yourself from). Canadian fare is the cornerstone of Feast + Revel, the hotel’s signature restaurant, where dinner dishes include fish and chips made with shandy battered Lake Erie pickerel and charred lemon.

You're here because

The 24-hour rooftop gym allows you to shred the proverbial gnar with virtual trainers on its tech-forward ellipticals and treadmills—all while taking in a pigeon’s-eye view of the skyline. The Jetsons couldn’t have dreamt of it.

The Moment

With a Venetian Spritz in your hand—a cocktail with cherry-infused Top Shelf gin and St Germain—you can’t help but utter a contented “Oh, Canada.” At the 16th-floor rooftop bar, Copper Spirits & Sights, the copper rooftops of the city are splayed out before you like a brand new land ripe for exploration. Never mind that it was founded in 1826—it’s as fresh as you feel in this moment, the twilight breeze in your hair.

Restaurants & Bars

Feast + Revel - Features Canadian cuisine with a sense of place.

Copper Spirits and Sights - Rooftop lounge with stunning views, craft cocktails and small plates.

Location

Tucked within Byward Market, an al fresco public shopping district that’s been an Ottawa institution since 1826. The National Gallery of Canada is just a five minute walk away; ditto the National Art Centre.
