Tulum, Mexico
Be Tulum
Tulum's hippest option
What it is
A stylish retreat on the sand in Tulum.
What it isn't
Rustic or traditional.
What we think
Tulum is known for attracting a fashion-conscious crowd, but many hotels here are distinctive for their absence of style—just a couple of palapa-style huts planted in the sand. Some find the rusticity refreshing, but those looking for a touch of sophistication should head to Be Tulum. The look here is still natural but contemporary, with rectangular buildings made of stone, timber and glass, and a sexy pool and beach club with a lounge-y (but unobtrusive) soundtrack. The 20 suites, separated by wooden pathways through the palms, are made chic with cowhide rugs, large stand-alone bathtubs in the middle of the bedroom, and either a private plunge pool or jacuzzi. This is decidedly a place for couples (no children under 12 are allowed), and especially those who require creature comforts. Unlike many of the other hotels along the eco-conscious Tulum strip, this one has 24-hour electricity and A/C.
