Hotel Bel-Air
A Dorchester Collection Hotel
What it is
A tranquil, garden-bedecked oasis in an exclusive enclave.
What it isn't
A scene. You'll spot A-Listers here and there, but discretion is the guiding principle.
What we think
The city of freeways and parking lots only has a handful of peaceful green spaces—and the Hotel Bel-Air occupies one of the best. The property, a member of the Dorchester Collection, is set on 12 acres of landscaped gardens in affluent Bel Air, just a mile from Beverly Hills. The 200-plus plant species (all cared for by a full-time gardening team) make the place feel like a remote jungle: trumpet vine, camellia bushes, bougainvillea and Nepalese azaleas surround fountains; meandering Saltillo tile paths connect the villas, pool and spa to the main building. The pink Spanish Mission–style hotel opened in 1946 and emerged from a two-year renovation in 2011. Styled by Alexandra Champalimaud, the black, white and pale yellow palette, custom furniture and patterned rugs evoke French Deco and mid-century Hollywood Regency. Niceties in the higher-category rooms include fireplaces, patios and plunge pools. The five-star La Prairie spa is gorgeous and specializes in anti-aging treatments. Wolfgang Puck runs the local California cuisine restaurant, and we love the black and white portraits of Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and other stars in the bar. But while there may well be a few celebrities lurking around, this is less a see-and-be-seen spot than a low-key hideaway.
You're here because
You want to stay in a Hollywood legend—because you're a legend yourself (the kind who requires tranquility and pampering).
The Moment
The sun sparkles on the ripples of the pool. A cabana boy strolls over with a tray of mojito popsicles and frozen grape skewers. He adjusts your umbrella and disappears between the palm fronds.
